History and Heritage: Repositioning the Montien Hotel

Written by Calvin Ng | Apr 29, 2022 8:19:00 AM

In 2019, Aura Group set out to collaborate with the Tantakit family to reposition one of Bangkok’s original 5-star hotels, Montien Hotel Surawong. Three generations ago, the Tantakit family was entrusted to construct Royal palaces and homes for his late Majesty King Bhumibol. In collaboration with the Royal architect, the family worked to design the Montien Hotel.

Rich with heritage and history, the architectural and interior design intentions of the renowned royal architect are still reflected in the building’s uniquely Thai aesthetic. The architect named the hotel Montien, meaning royal house, which despite its majestic connotations alludes to a house that is truly open to all, where guests feel warmly welcomed and at home.

For the repositioning, the motto of the “Revival of the Original” was designed to keep the rich heritage intact while modernizing the 400-key hotel. Next door, we also developed the 179 key 56 Surawong from the ground up. The journey was full of adversity, as COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions affected both construction and re-opening.

Despite the adversity, the team has achieved what seemed impossible.

As of 1 May, the Montien Surawong is the #1 Hotel in Bangkok as ranked by Tripadvisor and the Ruenton restaurant the #21 best restaurant in Bangkok. Congratulations to the Tantakit family, and the entire Montien Hotel Surawong Bangkok team on this achievement.
